Theoretical Physics

Theoretical physics is classical applied mathematics. Our deepest understanding of the world, our most accurate predictions of real phenomena, come from mathematical models of theoretical physics. Our department offers a wide range of courses in quantum mechanics, and a number of our department members have spent their lives trying to improve our understanding of these models.

The topics studied in our department range from the study of the so-called elementary particles (alas, they're not so elementary to understand) through the behaviour of atoms to the behaviour of large molecular structures, such as polymers. The level of detail available, and the precision and accuracy of the mathematical models, of course changes as we move from one level to the next.
