Studentships: I am always looking for outstanding students
If you are interested in graduate or undergraduate studies in biological physics or condensed matter physics, please contact Dr. Karttunen. There are many possible projects, for example, in biological physics, colloidal systems, polymers, drug delivery mechanisms, pattern formation, and multiscale modeling methods. Opportunities are available for graduate students starting in fall 2008/January 2009. Applications should be made as soon as possible.Summer students and undergraduate projects
We try to offer summer studentships to outstanding students every year. In the past, these studentships have almost always lead to peer reviewed publications and/or thesis (BSc, MSc and even PhD) projects. Early applications are encouraged. Honours Thesis projects (491) are also available in physics and applied mathemtics.Postdoctoral Fellowships
- There is a strong possibility for a funded postdoc opening in late summer/fall 2009. This position will initially be for 1 year with the possibility of extension up to 3 years in total. The project involves theoretical and computational studies of metallic nanoparticles and their interactions. The successful candidate is expected to have a good knowledge of (non-equilibrium) Green's function formalism and DFT/ab initio methods.
Exchange students
Wish to spend a year with us? UWO has an extensive exchange program with a large number of universities world-wide. Click here for a list of UWO's partner universities and instructions of how to apply. There are particularly extensive programs for students from the Baden-Würtenberg (Germany) and Rhône-Alpes (France) areas.International dimension
We have extensive collaborative projects with colleagues in the Nordic Countries, Asia, Central Europe, and across North America. Typically, our students and postdocs are involved in such projects as well. We are also part of the following research networks.- The European Science Foundation (ESF) programme, Functional Dynamics in Complex Chemical and Biological Systems (FUNCDYN)
- The European Science Foundation (ESF) programme SIMU - Challenges in Molecular Simulation
- CoRGI, Collaborative Research in Geometric Integration
- FinNano nanoscience and technology program
Living in London, Ontario
It is worth noting that the cost of living is relatively low in London. Based on www.homefair.com comparison, if you are offered a funding package of $24,000 from Western, you would need to be offered a funding package of $38,180 from a university located in Toronto and $36,164 from a university located in Vancouver to have the same standard of living.General information
Please notice: Don't let the name 'Applied Mathematics' fool you, we do a lot of physics as can be seen from our departmental pages. In addition to offering degrees in applied mathematics, the department belongs to the special programs
Applications may be made at any time during the academic year.
