Description and purpose

For whom:

The Summer School is targeted to graduate students & postdocs working in soft / condensed matter physics. The number of participants is limited to about 50 due to hands-on exercises that require access to computers. Early application is therefore strongly encouraged.

The emphasis is put on lectures and hands-on exercises in order to give the students a good theoretical and practical knowledge of the new methods and methodologies. These will be complemented by a few focused research seminars and a poster session.

Language:

All lectures, exercises & course material will be in English.

Topics:

The lectures comprise various topics including

  1. General aspects of modeling and computer simulation of soft matter systems
  2. Statistical mechanics: the foundations of modeling & computer simulations
  3. Molecular dynamics & non-equilibrium molecular dynamics
  4. Importance of hydrodynamics and how to include hydrodynamics in simulations
  5. Dissipative Particle Dynamics & Smoothed Particle Dynamics
  6. Malevanets-Kapral model
  7. Phase field modeling
  8. Hybrid models - practical approaches to connecting different length and time scales in simulations
  9. Electrostatics

Format:

  • Each lecturer will have 3 lectures of 45 min - 1 hour.

  • There will be hands-on assignments for the participants. We will organize a good number of PC & free seminar rooms that will be available for the students for the duration of the School. We will also organize teaching assistants to help the students in the assignments.

  • In addition to the lectures and assignments, there will be a small number of tutorial sessions. The idea is that after the lectures and the assigments the students can ask more questions and discuss with the lecturers.

  • The lecture notes will be published. The journal / series is still open.
